Happy Fashion Friday!
I have a super fun arts and crafts project for my beautiful little bunnies to try over the holiday weekend!

I love buying new clothes, but sometimes I love making them even more!
I started college as a fashion design major, so I have always been a little crafty when it comes to recycling old T-shirts. This has to be my new favorite DIY reclaimed shirt. You can wear this casual racerback to your workout and then dress it up with a lacy bandeau when you meet your friends for some rabbit food afterwards. Turn your basic into a chic little number and go hit the gym like you own it!

DIY Workout Shirt
Makes 1 sexy little tank

Ingredients:
1 old T-shirt
1 pair of scissors
20 minutes

1. Start with a pre-washed T-shirt. Any old shirt will do! The bigger the better.

2. Cut away the ribbed neckline and bottom hem. For the sleeves, cut downwards starting from the shoulder, determining how thick you want your straps. Cut straight down and then begin to curve down below the armpit seam.

3. Determine how low you want your front neckline, and cut away.

4. Flip the shirt over and make a narrow racerback, curving inward from the armpits.  Then cut a deep “V” shape from the top neckline.

5. Using the excess bottom hemline, stretch it out until it becomes one long string of fabric. Knot the string a couple of inches above the bottom of the “V” shape.

6. Wrap the string all the way down around the center of the racerback, and back up to meet the other ends. Knot the ends together tightly. Trim the loose ends.

7. To give your tank a high-low look, lay your shirt sideways, flattening it out evenly. Starting a few inches up at the front of your shirt, start cutting diagonally until you reach the back.

Throw it on with some cute yogis, grab your water, and hit the gym!
Post or email your photos if you make a shirt! I can’t wait to see your creations!

Hey Catherine! Im glad you posted your blog, you look freaking awesome! I just started my own healthy way of life (not on a diet because I should not lose any weight 🙂 ) But I have green smoothies everyday and my food groups are the “Rabbit Food” I love that! I’m wondering if you are selling those shirts? I would love one so I can cut it like you did!!

Thanks Paige, you are so sweet! Don’t you love eating healthy? When I eat healthy, I feel so much better, and it makes such a difference in my mood! I have tons of healthy recipes and treats coming up to keep healthy eating fun and exciting!

As for the shirt, I actually hand cut a stencil for the writing and then carrot and spray painted it onto a guys shirt from Target! A few people have been asking me about buying shirts, so I think I am going to screen print some in a couple of weeks! I’m so glad everyone is liking them. I will definitely let you know when I make my first batch! xo

I bought a men’s size small at Target, so it was pretty big on me.
Pick a shirt that fits as loosely around the waist/hips and you will get the baggy look!

A lot of people have been asking for them, so I am currently looking into having shirts screen printed to sell on my website. Love this! Made my new workout shirt today and it is awesome. I left the section at the top because it had something printed there and then tied it from there down and it worked great. Basically skipped the big V cut out on back and curved it down about 3 inches from top toward arm pits. So cute. Thanks for sharing! And I am enjoying your blog!

It took me four tries to finally get this right, but that’s fine with me. I kept shrinking the size of my shirt every time I made it, so here are some tips that helped me if you’re having the same problem:

    1. practice on a shirt that you don’t really care about messing up. More than likely it will happen.

    2. cut the exact same way demonstrated in the pictures. Your shirt should resemble a tank top with thin straps. Also cut a deep V in the back.

    3. and above all, make sure that you start tying your knot a couple inches above the V like it was specified.

If I had done those three things, I could have saved at least one shirt, but hey, it’s a learning process 😛

Thanks for the tutorial and I can’t wait to show it off at the gym!

I just tried to do one myself, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I wish I would have read through the comments first cause then I would have known to use a larger then normal t-shirt. But I plan to go pick up some cheap ones soon. I would use one of my hubby’s shirts but he is a 3X and I am not sure how that would turn out…..Thanx 🙂

Hi, I just made one of these out of a shirt I tie dyed to sell and it came out pretty low in the side boob department lol. I am larger up top so maybe I should’ve cut accordingly but hadn’t done this before. When I wear my sports bra it covers all the goodies at least but not sure I did something wrong or the side is supposed to be that way? Anyways not sure if I will keep this one or try to give it to someone less busty!

Hi Jaine! A bandea or sports bra usually helps with coverage! The shirt is meant to be loose and low cut, but you could try to start closer to the original arm pit seams for a more modest fit!

just a question – does the twist in the back hurt if you do abs or any floor work? i made a tank from some tees using another how-to on pinterest (where you just gather the back of the shirt and wrap cut fabric around it, then knot), and the knot digs into my spine super bad when i do abs lol

The twist and knot could be a little irritating during floor work, this could be better as a “cardio” top haha

I made this almost a year ago – yes the ends of the shirt roll up, but other than that, I LOVE the ones I’ve made. I still wear them every week for a bunch of different things – cleaning, working out, yardwork, etc. My advice is to use shirts that are too big for you. I wear a women’s Medium and I used Men’s Large shirts. Worked out perfectly, but I also have a pretty short torso 🙂

I posted about mine in a comment above with a link back to my blog so you can see what other final products look like, and I know other commenters have done the same. My blog is thecraftrookie.blogspot.com

I just made the back the front (cutting of the buttons made a ‘V’) and then followed the rest of the directions and it is awesome! Thanks

Used the idea from this tutorial to make a very similar style raceback workout shirt – only I did 3 knots on the back (one on the vertical raceback bit, then one on each shoulder strap type area) to create more of a triangle shaped racerback style. Thanks for the idea! Managed to turn a t-shirt that I’d never wear into a workout shirt I love.

Wow I love this shirt! I just made one for the ladiesrun in Rotterdam next weekend of mine old pink shirt from last year! The only thing I’ve change is macramé-knotting instead of wrapping it down! Thank you so much for this DIY! 🙂

I have actually been working out for a few months, and I am realizing just how expensive workout clothes as alone. I bought two sport bras for $20.00 each and that isnt including the pants and shirts. I saw your DIY and I knew that I had some old ratty shirts and I tried the design and I really like it. Much cheaper than buying all the clothes. I am going to the gym today when i get off work and can’t wait to try it out.

Fantastic blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring
writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little
lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go
for a paid option? There are so many options out there
that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any recommendations?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Catherine,
thank you so much for the Diy idea. I actually created a similar shirt to yours. I wrote the phrase “EAT MORE RABBITH FOOD” and also painted the carrot on my T-Shirt because it looks so cute. I found your blog today (thanks pinterest) and I would like to tell you that you seem to be a very nice and inspiring person so I wish you good luck :).

Hey c:. I totes LOVE this idea for the shirt. I want to try the stencil thing though for my art class. Can I use the ‘Eat more Rabbit Food’ slogan??? It’s just so creative

(btw, I’m 14 and it’s solely for my art class but I might wear it around when I’m done.)

Love this DIY shirt!! 1 question: How did you protect the shirt when spray painting?

Just wanted to let you know I tried to make this and #NailedIt…by that I mean #Failed! Only because my shirt had my company logo smack dab in the back, so I didn’t want to cut that! But I did use your pic, but gave you full credit and linked back to your post and your Pinterest post. If you’d like me to take it down, let me know! Thanks for the cute idea, I should try it again, with a different shirt! xoxo, ganeeban

I just did this to a huge Imagine Dragons tee I got at Lollapalooza Argentina last year. Last year! I was too afraid to cut it, but it looks awesome! Thanks so much for the help!
