Antioxidant Smoothie

Before I get to my smoothie recipe I wanted to talk about a couple of things!

First: Thank you thank you thank you to all of my little bunnies who ordered shirts and “Eat More Rabbit Food” merch! I can’t even tell you how thankful and humbled I am by your support! I’m also so happy that you guys love rabbit food as much as I do : ).

Second: Sorry for being a little MIA on the blog! Once I list merch in my online shop, it turned in to utter madness (and happiness)! I get so excited when I see your orders come in and want to get them packed up and shipped as fast as I can so you can wear your new goodies, but then I totally stress myself out thinking I’m superwoman lol. But guess what, everyone’s orders (up to today at 2pm) have been shipped! WOOO!! It’s just me myself and I running my blog, email, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, so when I add shirts into the mix, I literally go crazy. Today, I ate an entire bag of goldfish while I packed orders and laughed when I realized the bag was empty. Im stress eating like crazy this week! I’m also working on a huge freelance graphic design project right now, so I have a feeling I will be buying another bag of goldfish this week.. haha. These are things I used to beat myself up about, but now, I know that I’m stressed, I’m eating because I’m stressed, I’m going to get my workout on later tonight, everything will be ok, and life goes on! I’m glad to have a much healthier perspective on food now vs a couple of years ago… which leads me to my next subject! The Organic CBD Nugs help with stress.

Since this week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, and I wanted to post a different kind of Transformation Tuesday. I didn’t just want to post this, I NEEDED to post this. If you guys have been following me for a while, you’ve probably read my weight loss story, but today, I wanted to talk about my recovery/weight gain story!

Before and After RecoveryYou may have noticed that I don’t really talk about weight very much. I am totally open to talking about my before (heaviest) and after (lowest) weights. I can tell you that in the photo on the left, I was at my worst in my eating disorder and I weighed around 100 lbs. But now… I don’t care what I weigh. Yes, I weigh myself on occasion to make sure I’m in a normal range for my body, and am not getting crazy with the bags of goldfish (haha), but for the most part my jeans and bra are a good indicator of how I’m doing. I will notice if I go to Sprinkles Ice Cream too many days in a row that my bra is feeling a litttttlllleee snug so I replace the Sprinkles Ice Cream with banana nice cream that I make in my Yonanas. It’s taken me a LONG time and a lot of hard work to get to this place where I don’t beat myself up over certain things, and can happily allow myself things like goldfish and ice cream, but it has been 100% worth it.

During my weight loss journey, I became obsessed with losing weight. I loved when people would call me “tiny” and “skinny” and was driven by people who thought that I was too thin. In my ED mindset, the thinner the better. But did it equal happiness? No, not at all. I was extremely depressed, miserable, always hungry, in pain, and my brain was foggy because I wasn’t nourishing my body with enough calories. At my lowest weight of about 100 lbs, I was never small enough. At this point I was terrified of most foods (even fruit, wtf), I had alienated myself from all of my friends, and never had any energy. At one point I didn’t think I was thin enough or worthy enough to live. That’s when I has a huge meltdown that saved my life. I started therapy and working with a nutritionist to become happy and healthy again, which was the best decision I’ve ever made. Was it easy? No. Was it fun? Not really. But was it worth it? Yes. During my recovery I realized what it was like to live again and eat freely without caring. Instead of working out to burn what I ate, now I workout because it’s fun and I love the friends that I’ve made at spin. I eat healthy because I love the way it makes me feel. It scares me when I look back at old photos when I was too small and thought I was “fat.” It’s terrifying how frail I was. I’m so happy to be where I am today! I have so much more muscle and love my strong legs and hiney compared to what I looked like during my ED. Starving & overexercising will not make you happy, no matter how much you think it will. Say yes to healthy eating, sexy muscles, and happiness! I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire just one person to choose recovery and a healthy lifestyle!

Now that the serious part is done, onto the recipe! Today’s recipe is one of my best friend’s favorites! I can’t eat berries (worst allergy ever… boo), so I make this for my sister and her fiancé to enjoy while I stick with my Tropical Green Smoothie!

2014 So Far

I feel like I haven’t done a personal update for a looonnngggg time, and I realized this when someone left a comment asking if I went blonde. Well… yes I went blonde at the beginning of January! I had been wanting to go lighter for a while and finally went for it after the new year. I’ve posted multiple photos of my new locks on Instagram but completely neglected to post my array of selfies on my blog haha. So for those of you who are interested in my new hurrr and what I’ve been up to, here it is!

2014 So Far 1
My obsession with green juice and green smoothies is still going strong. My favorite juice is the Greenie from Nekter Juice Bar! Parsley, spinach, kale, celery, cucumber, lemon and apple.
2014 So Far 2
2014 So Far 3
Fav green smoothie recipe is still my RFFMBT Simple Green Smoothie.
2014 So Far 4
I did my very first back-to-back spin class at Full Psycle!!! I came out of my 6:30pm class, ran into my friend Blake and he said “do the hip hop class at 7:30 with me!” In my head I was like no way Jose, I just finished pedaling my heart out for 45 minutes, I am d.o.n.e. but then one of the founders/instructors, Shelly overheard Blake and I and said “Catherine, if you take the next class, it will be the first sold out hip hop class of 2014!” So of course I gave in, grabbed the last open bike at the front of class and gave it my all! I actually did BETTER in the second class! I think it’s because my legs were warmed up, and I had tons of endorphins and energy after class #1! I kept my Polar HRM going and burned 1,879 calories between both classes! DAYUMMM! For anyone who may ask, my watch is a Polar RC3 with GPS. I have a full review of the watch here.
2014 So Far 8
Earned myself 2 Full Psycle Raglan shirts for those 2 back-to-back classes! Great milestone in my workout journey!
2014 So Far 9
I took advantage of the CA heat wave and went Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) for the first time with my friend Blake! We had SO much fun, it’s a great core, arm, and back workout! Of course I had to sport that FP Raglan shirt that I earned the day before! My bow bikini bottoms are by a local company called LOlli Swim. They were limited edition Minnie Mouse themed, but LOlli has some other beyond adorable bow bottoms in stores and online!

I also took my very first Pilates class at Core Reform in the beginning of January. I started taking a few semi-private lessons with my friend Taryn so that we could learn the proper form on the reformer. I highly recommend doing this. Reformer Pilates classes might seem intimidating, but if you take a couple of private lessons (or at least one) to understand how it works, it makes the classes much better! I was hooked after my first class, bought a month of unlimited classes and have been going 4 times a week! My abs hurt so good!
2014 So Far 10
Of course I’m still obsessed with spin at Full Psycle and go 6 days a week! I’ve been loving alternating spin and Pilates throughout the week since my legs get pretty stiff from cycling. Pilates has really helped!
2014 So Far 11

Last month I also took Teddy to Corgi Beach Day in Huntington Beach!
2014 So Far 12
Last week my friend and fellow health & fitness blogger Kayleigh (Okay Fitness) and I took her adorable little munchkin nephew to Disneyland! Taking a toddler to Disneyland and pushing a stroller around the cobblestone streets in the park is a workout in itself. Mad respect to all of the mommas out there who do this!

Other obsessions in 2014: slouchy beanies and lipstick. Bright bold lips that give you confidence and make you feel girly! Sorry I’m to sorry for all of the selfies! February is the month of self love! I guess it’s less awk than asking my friends to take photos of me? haha.

Lip Liner: Mac lip liner pencil in Cherry
Top Coat: Covergirl Natureluxe gloss balm in Anemone 225

Lip Liner: Covergirl Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Splendid 235

Last night I had a serious moment! I made a new PR in spin at Full Psycle. #1 out of all of the girls, #4 all around, and 2 away from 500 total energy!!! This was a huge huge accomplishment for me and I still have a smile on my face today! My very first class on 7/8/13, my total energy was 158 kilojoules and my average power was 69! HOLY GUACAMOLE, that’s an enormous difference. I cannot believe how strong I have gotten!!! I’ve noticed a huge change in my mood, overall happiness, and body composition since starting spin and Pilates!

2014 So Far 17
So far, 2014 has been all about stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying new things! Have you tried a new workout or healthy recipe since the beginning of 2014? Let me know!

Tips For Your First Spin Class

Spinning is definitely no ride in the park but all that pedaling will work the quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves, and core and give you a total calorie burn anywhere from 400 calories and up! Good news for anyone with joint issues, indoor cycling keeps impact on the joints to a minimum.

I’ve been totally addicted to spin class at Full Psycle recently! Once I powered myself through my first class I was absolutely hooked. Since some of you guys have been asking me questions about spin class on Instagram, I thought I would share what I’ve learned so far. I’m no expert, but I hope that these tips will make spinning seem a little less intimidating and maybe inspire you to try a class! I mean, it’s just a stationary bike… how terrible could it be?! haha.

CATHERINE’S QUICK TIPS
Reserve a bike before class:
Spin class popularity is on the rise, so make sure to call or reserve a bike online beforehand if your studio requires it.
Don’t sit in the very back row:
I know, we’re all tempted to snag a bike in the very back row our first time, but if you sit towards the front (second row) you will be able to watch the instructor and veterans. Its often helpful to watch a pro and use them as a guide.
Don’t go faster than the veterans: If your legs are going faster than the veterans or instructor, you probably don’t have enough intensity and you’re not doing yourself any favors. When your instructor says “give it your all” or “go go go” think of it as intensity, not leg speed.
Kick your heals out with some force to unclip from the pedals: I saw a girl a few days ago take her feet out of the shoes and leave them on the pedals after class! No need to do that haha, unclipping is easy!
Bring water: Seriously, I drank an entire 1 liter bottle of Smart Water my first class!
If you have a Heart Rate Monitor Watch: BRING IT! You will be so motivated and inspired by your endurance and the amount of calories you burn!

Full Psycle(source: Full Psycle)

What to expect:
Expect a vigorous workout! You will burn upward of 400 or more calories per 45 minute class. Every class is different, but you’re going to get a hardcore workout no matter what. For those of you who say “I never sweat,” you will!

Don’t be intimidated: Yes, there will probably be some seasoned pros in your class, but there will also be some newbies and people of all different ages, sizes, and level! Spinning is less intimidating than you may think.
Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from trying an awesome workout! Remember that anything new is always scary. It’s just spinning!

Polar RC3 GPS 1My new PR calorie burn from Spin class at Full Psycle!

Polar RC3 GPS 2Polar sent me their new Polar RC3 GPS to review, and I am so obsessed with it. Aside from the clips I have been wearing to class, this is one of the biggest reasons I am so addicted to spin. You can watch your progress and see your exact calorie burn, minimum, average, and maximum heart rate, distance, and more! I’ve been wearing the heart rate monitor to class and it has been life changing you guys! I will be doing a full review on this watch and it’s functions in a couple of weeks!

THE ATTIRE:
Suit up: You will definitely work up a sweat, so throw on some moisture-wicking clothes to keep cool and dry.

Girls: I recommend crops and a fitted tank that’s tight so you don’t have a lot of extra fabric. Oh, and it can’t hurt your ride to put on something you feel confident in!

Guys: Shorts and a tank. A lot of guys end up without shirts by the end of class because it can get pretty hot in the studio.

Thoughts on padded bike shorts: The saddle can be an issue for some people and I’ll admit, the seats can definitely take some getting used to, but my advice would be to take the class in your normal workout gear and see what you think before buying cycling shorts. I don’t think padded cycling shorts are 100% necessary since you do spend a good amount of time out of the saddle, but it’s all about preference. If it makes you more comfortable, go for it!

Shoes matter: Make sure to call ahead or look at the FAQ online to see if your shoes are okay for class. In most cycling classes normal athletic kicks are just fine, but in others, cycling shoes are required.

My two cents on cycling shoes: I suggest finding a studio that has cycling shoes to rent, because with cycling shoes the feet are connected to the pedals much more securely. “Clips” as they’re called, can also make you more comfortable on the bike, give you more power, and allow you to get more integration of muscles in the legs for an overall better workout.

WHAT TO BRING
Towel: Bring a towel if your studio doesn’t provide them and keep it draped over the handlebars for easy access.

Water Bottle: You are definitely going to want a big bottle of water nearby! Swigging water is encouraged mid-ride to stay hydrated, although the spin n’ sip may take some coordination haha. Sport cap bottles are suggested.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
Eats: It’s important to feel like Goldilocks before class. You know… not to be too full and not too hungry.

Hydration: Stay well hydrated before, during and after class! You know you are properly hydrated if you are not feeling thirsty. Probably a good idea to use the restroom before class too!

Arrive 15 minutes before class begins, especially if it’s your first time. You will probably have to sing a waiver and it takes a few minutes to get properly situated on your bike.

Full Psycle 2
IN CLASS

Bike setup is key to a great ride: Don’t be afraid to ask your instructor for help setting you up on the bike. It’s the best way to prevent unnecessary discomfort and injuries!

Resistance: There are no real gears to change, but there is a resistance knob (or computer screen in some cases). There should always be some resistance on the pedals. It takes a few classes to get familiar with the right amount of resistance for you, but you’ll get the hang of it.

Don’t give up: If you start to feel exhausted or overwhelmed, just sit down in the saddle, take the tension down, and continue to peddle through the end of the class if you can. You’ll be prouder of yourself for enduring the class than walking out! Give yourself permission to build into this activity and you’ll find that you enjoy it more each time.

AFTER CLASS

Stretch: Take full advantage of stretching those legs to keep tightness and injuries to a minimum.

Eat: It may seem a little counterintuitive, but immediately after your workout is the best time of day to eat. Try to eat a high protein meal right away, because your body’s ability to refill muscle energy stores decreases by 50 percent if you wait to eat just 2 hours after your workout! Everyone loves an incentive to eat, right?!

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated following your workout.

Indoor cycling puts things in full gear with its awesome tunes, control over resistance and speed, and overall intensity. Hop on to the nearest bike and give this class a go!

Do you have any additional tips for first time spinners or a story about your first class? I would love to hear about it!

Birthday Week & Pre Surgery

Hi everybunny!

You may have noticed my lack of a new blog post on Monday. I actually got anxiety over it throughout the day. At every appointment, I couldn’t help but think that all I wanted to do was post a new recipe for you guys! True Life: I’m addicted to blogging. No worries, I am back in action! Over the weekend I have become a packing and shipping professional, and shipped a bajillion (omg do you remember saying that word when you were little? who am I kidding, I still use it) Eat More Rabbit Food shirts. I cannot believe how many shirts were purchased within the first couple of days, my little bunnies are so amazing! I am loving all of your Instagram and Twitter photos of you guys wearing your shirts, SO CUTE! I have had a problem viewing and commenting on some of your Instagram photos because some accounts are private, but I do get to see a little thumbnail and that makes me so happy!

Drumroll pleaseeeee: Wednesday, August 15th is my 23rd Birthday! This birthday doesn’t seem too magical. I’m usually so into birthdays. I’m like the birthday queen ova hurrrr, but not so much this year. Blink 182 totally called it in their song “What’s My Age Again“… Nobody likes you when your 23. You’ll hear it right at the 27 second mark of their video. So nostalgic, I love Blink 182! I’ll be blasting this song at midnight on my birthday, feel free to sing along with me haha

Louder drumroll pleaseeee: Thursday I will be having a minor surgery (no anesthesia or anything like that) on my foot to remove a possibly but hopefully not cancerous mole. Happy Birthday Catherine, enjoy your surgery! BOOOO! Skin Cancer runs in my family and I have had a cancerous mole before, so cross your fingers that this one is not! Skin cancer does not discriminate, you guys. It doesn’t matter how tan or dark you are. Since I will have stitches and crutches I probably won’t be able to do too much standing or cooking, so I am thinking of some other fun things to write about towards the end of the week. I’m thinking about being super obnoxious and quizzing my Dermatologist about skin and skin cancer during my surgery. That would be some fun times, right? Orrr maybe RFFMBT Q&A Part 2? Then I can get nice ‘n’ comfy on the couch, prop my foot up, and type away!
If you have any questions for the Q&A you can leave them in a comment on this post, or via Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #RFFMBTQA2
It can be anything from health & fitness, to beauty!

The incredible Heather from For the Love of Kale wore my EAT MORE RABBIT FOOD SHIRT in her latest vlog! Umm how amaze does she look?! Total celeb status! Heather, I want a hair tutorial next! haha

I don’t know if it’s just me, but recently I have not been motivated to run. Great timing since I am having surgery on my foot, right? I’m in such a running rut that I cannot even lace my shoes up. Maybe it’s the heat? Maybe not actually, because I cannot even get myself to run indoors on a treadmill. There are times where I get obsessed with an exercise and do it almost every day for months straight and then get super sick of it, but running and The Bar Method have been my two favorites for quite some time now. The combination of Bar Method classes and running seem to be a perfect match for me and my schedule but lately I’m so over running. I don’t even know how I am saying this because I usually look forward to going on a run since it is usually a way for me to get things off of my mind and relax. Recently it just seems like more of a chore than something I look forward to. That’s definitely not how working out should be. If you feel this way, Join me as I try to get out of my exercise rut! Don’t forget, there are so many options, there is something out there for everyone to enjoy.

When I have been in previous workout ruts, I usually have a go to list to get myself motivated again, so here I am again with my list!
1. Make a new running playlist
2. Pick a new route to explore
3. Put together some cute/stylish running outfits
4. Get a new pair of running shoes

Sometimes my workout routines just get well… too routine, which leads to boredom. I always try to change up my playlist and route to keep from getting bored, and it is definitely time to shake things up. When I am really stuck in a workout rut, I will sometimes treat myself to some new workout swag to get myself pumped up again. This usually does the trick for me, because I’m a total girly girl and I love a new outfit! This time I think I need a little gifty for myself and a goal to work towards to keep me motivated. I really want to try a pair of Vibram FiveFingers! I took to my Facebook and Twitter to ask if anyone had a pair, and if so what they thought about them. I got some great responses that got me totally excited to try them out! Did you hear that, I got excited to run again, woo! Baby steps here! I’ve heard that it takes some time to get used to them since they are so different than normal running shoes (they have individual toes), and you have to gradually work up towards running 100% in them. This seems like a fun and interesting challenge for me. Viola, have I solved my running rut with a new running shoe challenge? I hope so! It’s time to set a new FitFluential goal! #FitFluential

Question: Have you ever been in a workout rut? How did you get through it?

On a higher note: One of my best friends, Behnaz brought me back a little treat from her trip to Israel this summer! She brought me a Milk Chocolate Bar with Popping Candy. It’s literally a chocolate bar with pop rocks in it! This is probably the most genius chocolate bar ever invented. Willy Wonka, you’re my man, but you’re seriously lagging in this department. Every time you take a bite, you get the flavor of creamy milky chocolate, and the popping sensation of pop rocks. It really makes you slow down and be aware of how much chocolate you are consuming because those things are pop pop popping the entire time! Touché to this chocolate company for making me stop and think before inhaling the entire bar haha and thank you Behnaz for the awesome treat!

On a completely different note: I use way too many exclamation marks!!!!! I can’t help it, I’m always so excited when I talk about these things! If you know me, you totally understand! EXCLAMATION MARK!

Don’t forget to submit your questions about health, fitness, and beauty for the RFFMBT Q&A at the end of the week and check back on Wednesday for my Birthday post! xo
