Guess who’s back, back again.
Catherine’s back, tell a friend.
I have always told myself that I would be completely honest on my blog, so here it goes… Shortly after my surgeries I got completely overwhelmed with a series of events in my personal life, gained 20 pounds, and as a result I ended up completely relapsing into my eating disorder. But you know what, I’m human, I’m not perfect, and that’s life. We always get through it! During this time dark I felt that it was necessary to remove myself from social media and take some time for myself to get better. It took months of therapy, and it wasn’t easy, but I feel that I am in a much better place now. I’ve always stayed true to my word about practicing what I peach, so there is absolutely no way I could’ve been blogging and giving advice during that time, I wouldn’t have been right. I’m so happy to be more relaxed, healthy, and back blogging! I really appreciate your kind words and positive thoughts throughout my hibernation! You guys are the reason that I have been able to turn my blog into a professional career, and you have no idea how grateful I am for each and every one of you who reads RFFMBT. I’m sorry I didn’t give an update on what was going on sooner, but I didn’t have the strength at that time. The most important things… I’m healthy & RFFMBT is back!
You guys totally made me blush on Saturday when I announced that I was coming out of hibernation! Thank you so much for your hilarious comments, tweets, and hundreds of likes! I was worried I would’ve lost all of my readers after being gone for so long!

January 21, 2013 at 11:00 am (12 years ago)So glad you are back! I have missed reading your posts over the past few months.
I know how it feels to fall into a rut. I gained about 40 lbs totally out of no where which got me scared. I went to 5 different doctors over the course of 6 months who all told me I was fine. Eventhough Thyroid disease runs in my family. They all told me my thyroid levels were fine. So i tried dieting and exercise. The weight just would not come off so I kept pushing. Finally I found a doctor who took the right kinds of tests. It turned out to be PCOS. So now for the past year I have been in a battle to lose the weight , which is not easy. I lost about 12 lbs in 8 months! I know I have a long road ahead of me , but hopefully by sticking to it I can meet my goal and lose the rest of this 40lbs!
PCOS is tough becuase one of the “cures” is to lose weight , but to have PCOS means its very difficult to do so. And so the cycle continues..
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 12:55 am (12 years ago)Lauren I love your positive attitude! I have friends with PCOS and know how difficult it can be to lose weight, but oh my gosh 12 pounds, that’s fantastic! Keep doing what you’re doing and you will get there. xo

January 21, 2013 at 11:02 am (12 years ago)I just recently started reading your blog, and just wanted to say how amazing it is! You are such an inspiration, and when I was reading some of the stuff about you, I was glad to see that I’m not the only one who struggles with stuff. I thought I was alone in that, but I’m not! I’m glad you’re feeling better 🙂 Thank you so much for all you’re doing!
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 12:59 am (12 years ago)Hi Jess! Thank you so much, you are so sweet! I’m glad that by telling my stories of ups and downs I can help others. You are definitely not alone, so many of us struggle with certain things. I love that my blog is becoming a place for not only me but readers to inspire others!

January 21, 2013 at 11:02 am (12 years ago)As a woman with PCOS, I can assure you it is not a death sentence. Many women freak out at the diagnosis. But it does go hand in hand with Thyroid issues. It’s not fun, and it’s not easy. But stay strong. I recommend Vitex (Chasteberry) wholeheartedly. It is balancing out my hormones beautifully. It’s kick started my cycles, and I look forward to TTC with it. I am also using Bee Pollen to strengthen my eggs, and Rasberry (supplement) to ease the symptoms of my cycles. Good Luck!
Erin
January 21, 2013 at 2:19 pm (12 years ago)I hadn’t heard of PCOS before I was diagnosed with it last year and now I keep hearing about it! The diagnosis came after trying for a year to get pregnant – we’re still trying without success. Colleen can you elaborate on your supplements? How they’re working, when do you take them, and is there anything else you’re doing? Thanks 🙂
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 1:37 am (12 years ago)Hi Erin! PCOS is much more common than I thought! I would love to hear from Colleen about how her supplements are working as well! It’s nice to be able to talk to someone who can relate. I am learning so much from you guys! xo
Colleen
January 23, 2013 at 9:18 pm (12 years ago)Hi Erin and Catherine!
I take Vitex (Which can also be found as chasteberry) 3x a day. You do this for 3 months, then you can start taking it once a day. I helps to regulate hormones in your body naturally, and has seen a great deal of success. I’m HORRID about taking pills like I am suppose to. The last time I took this, I lasted about 1 month. But maintained normal cycles for about 5 months. I am determined to make it 3 months this time. So far, I am only in 3 weeks. But I have already gained a menstrual cycle, where before I could go months, or years without them. I have abnormal face and body hair growth, and sluggish adrenal glands (Lack of energy). I have gone 5 days without plucking! Whereas, I was finding myself doing it every night. There was no end in sight to this hair and it made me feel like a man… Not cute. I have also gained energy. My next cycle is due on the 7th of February, but I already feel it coming on. Vitex can certainly bring them early or later, as it is regulating a whole lot in your body. I feel “normal”. It’s strange to say that, but having dealt with all of these issues since I hit puberty, I’m sure you can understand why. I went 4 years without a period! No one could figure it out. All of my thyroid tests were normal, but I had a goiter when I was in 3rd grade.. Go figure.
Raspberry Leaf- Taken twice a day, usually with a glass of water and light breakfast. This helps my horrible cramping A LOT. I get every PMS symptom x10. Raspberry leaf brings them down to a manageable level. I only take this when I feel my body gearing up for the fight! haha
Bee Pollen- I get this from my mom’s beekeeper friend. I take 1 tablespoon at night with a large glass of water. I’m not sure yet if it is working. Hopefully some quality time with the man in my life will prove this. My friend with PCOS and a slew of other fertility issues conceived with her 1st round of IVF. That doesn’t happen often. She attributes the success to bee pollen.
I understand the Dr.s being a pain. I’ve been through a lot with my PCOS alone. It gave me “Pre-diabetes”. I was having seizures, but again, no one could figure it out. 4 neurologists & 2 endocrinologists later, I figured it out myself. Brought it up to my doctor, and I was right. My blood sugar has a habit of dropping FAST, but staying within normal limits. So no normal person tests can really catch it. I took my blood sugar when I felt the seizure coming, and 1 minute later. It dropped from 115 down to 70 in just 1 minute. Ugh. Now I am on Metformin, to regulate that. They do give it to women anyway that are TTC. But after 2 years, I still hadn’t had any luck. So I took it into my own hands, and so far so good!
Good Luck to both of you. It is rough, but stay positive.
Catherine
January 23, 2013 at 11:49 pm (12 years ago)Wow it seems like you have been on a huge roller coaster with PCOS! Thank you so much for the info and for sharing your story. I’m so happy you have found remedies that work for you 🙂
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 1:00 am (12 years ago)Thank you so much for the tips Colleen! I think I’m more frustrated with the diagnosis process than the disease itself! Doctors appointments get pretty aggravating at a certain point haha. Thank you so much for your support! xo

January 21, 2013 at 11:26 am (12 years ago)So happy to have you back! This is going to sound corny, but just reading your post brought tears to my eyes. I know how easy it is to fall back into eating disordered habits. And I also know just how extremely difficult it is to get back out and to get motivated again. Welcome to a brand new day and a new page in your healthy and happy life! You are strong and capable of getting through it all! Congrats 🙂

January 21, 2013 at 11:41 am (12 years ago)Yay you’re back!! 🙂
Also what is the best sushi restaurant in ca??
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 2:01 am (12 years ago)Oh my gosh, Hama Sushi in Little Tokyo, Downtown LA! The sushi is very traditional (no crazy fried Americanized rolls) and the fish is so fresh. Their Seared Albacore is to die for! The restaurant is very small and mostly bar seating along with 2 or 3 actual tables so the wait can get rather long, but its so delicious. Another great sushi place is Yamato in Westwood by UCLA. It’s always half off and their garlic edamame is the bomb! My other favorite is Sushi Laguna in Laguna Beach, they has some really out there rolls and a really awesome salmon lemon roll that is soo refreshing. Let me know if you stop by any of the restaurants! xo

January 21, 2013 at 11:54 am (12 years ago)Hi, I have been reading you blog for a few months now. You seem like you have had the same journey that I myself have had, and have discovered a love of all things fresh and healthy! I myself suffered from an eating disorder for a long time. I now have hypothyroidism as well. I actually know of another girl who had an eating problem, and now has the disorder as well. It is extremely manageable, and as soon as you get your body back in rhythm and your medicine regulates your hormones, you will be back to your normal self! A pill a day everyday for the rest of your life seems like a hard concept, but I’ve been doing it for 4 years and I barely notice. It may also be because you are too thin or your hormones are out of whack or you are stressed. You never know, your body could re-thrive and knock the disease out. Good luck, don’t stress, life is full of set backs and hardships but it all gets better with time and re-cooperation!
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 2:09 am (12 years ago)Awww you are practically my twin Beth! It’s so nice to know that I am not alone. My mom is a Beta Xi/UCLA Theta alum (now a Theta Trustee!), sister is an Eta Sigma/Chapman Theta alum, and I was just initiated as an alum at Beta Xi/UCLA! Since I went to art schools, we didn’t have greek life so I spent most of my time volunteering with my mom and sister for CASA. Joining as an alum has been such an amazing experience. I’ve always been the “honorary” Theta at events, but I am so incredibly happy to be a part of the sisterhood 🙂
TLAM,
Catherine

January 21, 2013 at 3:33 pm (12 years ago)Welcome back!!!!
I was so excited to see the facebook posting that I shouted out: SHE’S BACK! CATHERINE’S BACK!! Which scared my sleeping dogs quite badly, felt bad but oh well, such is life.
What’s so nice about a blog like yours is that you gain a support system of people from around the world. And from reading the previous replies to this post it’s nice to see how awesome some of your readers are.
You’re such an amazing woman! Powerful, strong, healthy, funny, exceedingly nice…so don’t worry when life get’s you down because with the support of your friends and family you also have a great support system of people online who are always here to give you a boost!
GLAD YOU’RE BACK!!!
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 2:25 am (12 years ago)Ok seriously in tears reading this! You have no idea how much joy you have brought me. When I started my blog, I had no idea where it would take me, but my readers have become like family to me. Everyone is so supportive of each other, and I couldn’t be happier. I am so very grateful for each and every one of you. You always pick me up when I’m having down days, and I’m so glad that I can do the same for others. Your support is indescribable and I feel so lucky. I am so happy to be back!

January 21, 2013 at 4:07 pm (12 years ago)SOOO HAPPY to have you back! being a college freshman has made it so hard to stay on track and stay healthy and I know the eating disorder struggles well. It’s so easy to not eat and then suddenly have a binge episode. Hopefully having you blogging again will help to keep me on track and keep me healthy. Missed you so much! xoxo
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 2:32 am (12 years ago)Aww thanks Bri, I am so happy to be back! College is definitely a transition, and it can be difficult to stay on track when there is little time to think about meals! Try to get a group of friends together and have a salad party in your dorm once a week! Everyone can bring different fresh ingredients. Make it a fun weekly thing to go to the gym or on a walk with friends to keep each other accountable. The little things add up in the end, so every small effort counts! Hopefully I can help you stay on track this semester! xo

January 21, 2013 at 5:38 pm (12 years ago)Welcome back! I’m curious what the best sushi restaurant in California is?!?
Catherine
January 22, 2013 at 2:40 am (12 years ago)Hama Sushi in Little Tokyo, Downtown LA! Let me know if try any of the restaurants! xo

Love reading your blog because it has great recipes and makes me try new things, and has a lot more vegetarian options than most I read (I am a vegetarian). Plus you introduced me to Joe the Juicer. I watched Fat Sick and Nearly dead after reading your post about meeting Joe at the conference and immediately went out to purchase a juicer. I love it.

January 24, 2013 at 2:47 am (12 years ago)Catherine I am so glad you are back. I’ve missed your posts. I have a thyroid issue also that I’ve been dealing with for about 15 years. I have to say reading your blog made me feel like I wasn’t the only one out there trying to cope. God bless you that you not only showed me that is can be done with healthy ways and tips, but that being human, we all have those bumps in the road, the important part is that you conquered it {just like I knew you would!} I wear your tshirt during my workouts – which keeps me motivated! BTW, I saw you caught a bouquet at your friend’s wedding – did that make your boyfriend nervous?LOL

January 24, 2013 at 6:23 pm (12 years ago)So thrilled to read your post. I left you in my reader hoping you were doing ok and one day would update. I too have been on a weight loss journey (50 lbs). This May marks five years since I started. I have been through many, many, many ups and downs in this time. But, overall, I am maintaining. I am not at my “lowest weight” nor do I want to be since it involves too much obsessing about food and exercise. I have finally found a happy medium. Thanks for being so honest – you are inspiring many who will see that one’s life graph of weight loss and being healthy is not a steady line. It has peaks and dips just like anything else we do. Hugs to you!

January 24, 2013 at 9:43 pm (12 years ago)So happy you are back! Yours is a favorite morning read for me! I also have PCOS, and I was diagnosed at 19 (I’m 28 now). The solution for me was to go on a full dose birth control (as opposed to a low hormone version like Yaz vs Yasmin). It just depends on your hormone levels, and it’s so much more common than you would think. Best of luck getting everything straightened out!

January 27, 2013 at 6:38 pm (12 years ago)I am just discovering your blog and I cannot stop reading your posts! I too have struggled from eating disorders and issues with body image for years. I have gone back and forth between times of being healthy and times of falling back. Lately I have been on a pretty steady track of being healthy up until a few weeks ago. My husband and I have instilled a new diet so that we don’t allow junk food or sugar into our house. We’ve also been going to the gym 5 days a week. For awhile I was doing good and eating healthy choices and feeling great but, now I keep thinking to myself about how much faster I could be losing weight if I resorted back. I’ve had days where I’m not happy unless I only consume a few hundred calories and I still go to the gym. I know I’m being insanely open but your blog is so inspiring to me to not have those thoughts and to not starve myself. How do you keep your mind on track? And what inspires you to stay healthy and not resort back? Thank you for being open and having a blog like this. It’s really inspiring for girls like me.

January 28, 2013 at 3:00 pm (12 years ago)Congratulations on becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Theta! Joining a sorority was the bestchoice I could have made in college and am still a very proud alumna, have the sticker on my car to prove it. Sororities are an amazing source of support and love. Good luck and enjoy!!

February 1, 2013 at 2:51 am (12 years ago)Hello! Found your blog via a friends post and couldn’t help but pick up on the talk about thyroid disease and PCOS possibilities. I wanted to encourage you and say that I’m 21years young, have BOTH “diseases” (although that sounds pretty harsh) and am doing fine. I’m on synthroid, cytomel and Metformin (for the PCOS) and even being so young it does not ruin your life. I was terrified to gain back the 30lbs that I lost through a path much like your own, but sticking with normal healthy eating and normal healthy exercise everything is as it should be and I’m in my happy 120’s. So don’t worry if the doctors do confirm both, you’ll be fine! That’s what medicine is for and everyone’s got something 😉 Thank you for sharing your story and being an encouragement to many.

February 2, 2013 at 4:35 pm (12 years ago)I am so glad you’re back! I had been following your blog and making every recipe religiously and was very worried when the post stopped coming. I’m sorry for your person troubles but I’m glad you eventually cut yourself some slack. Every bunny needs a break from perfection once in a while 🙂

February 6, 2013 at 9:08 am (12 years ago)I am just discovering your blog (through a friend on Pinterest) and am totally inspired. I am a 30 something who excercises regularly and was having trouble with weight loss. Found out I am hypothyroid and also have PCOS. I go back to the doctor on Monday to possibly change mediciations and was interested what you thought about the synthroid.
Much luck to you and can’t wait to see more blogs!
Thanks
Catherine
February 6, 2013 at 2:35 pm (12 years ago)Hi Kristiana! Wow, I am so surprised as to how many other women have Hypothyroid and PCOS! It almost seems like they come as a package deal… I have been SO happy with Synthroid. It took a few months to get it leveled out perfectly, but once I was on the right amount, I noticed I had so much more energy, some of my depression had lifted, and I lost 10lbs. I’m feeling so much better all around! As you know, medications work differently for everyone. My sister did not respond to the Synthroid so she has been taking Levoxyl since she had her thyroid removed at 15. Wishing you the best of luck, please keep me updated on how you’re feeling! xo

February 7, 2013 at 2:30 pm (12 years ago)Yay so happy you’re back and are doing well! I stumbled upon this blog last summer and read it religiously. I’ve been checking it every so often to see if you were back and today was my lucky day! I’m in my last semester of nursing school and have seen all this medical stuff you’ve been dealing with. You’re a rockstar for getting healthy & happy again – can’t wait to join you again. Stay happy!

February 15, 2013 at 2:52 pm (12 years ago)While you were in hibernation, I became addicted to reading your blog…and I just want to say thank you so much for existing! You are such an encouragement to me and I have completely turned my lifestyle around with the help of your blog. I am 20 years old and a busy college student (like a lot of your readers) and realized that I was at my wits end with being unkind to my body. Thanks to some of your recipes and your encouraging words, I have lost weight and more importantly I FEEL amazing. I’m so excited that you’re writing again! The world needs more people like you 🙂

February 25, 2013 at 12:10 pm (12 years ago)I just wanted to say thank you for sharing so much about your life with all of your followers. As someone who has struggled with eating disorders and arthritis, it is inspiring to hear from someone conquering their ed while also dealing with physical ailments. I know when my arthritis is acting up, that is when I most want to fall back into my ed, but seeing how you have come back once again from that struggle is a reminder that I can too.

March 8, 2013 at 7:41 pm (12 years ago)I’m so happy you’re back!! And so happy that you’re on the path to health. If you don’t mind sharing, how did you jump back from your ED relapse (other than therapy)? Do you eat intuitively? I’m going through something similar (gained 20lbs after actually starting to eat after restricting) and the super-low calorie tactics are beckoning me. I’m really trying to resist but I’m falling into the restrict/restrict/BINGE cycle. Boo 🙁 Reading your blog has inspired me though! I hope that I can one day look as great as you do now 🙂

March 25, 2013 at 8:07 am (12 years ago)Hi there! I have been a follower of your blog for some time, I too am hypothyroid and your story gives me hope for success with my health. I was soooo worried when you disappeared! But I wanted to say that I am SO glad that you are back and that you are honest about your struggles. I have been really down on myself lately because it seems like everyone online is absolute saints when it comes to fitness & nutrition, and I’ve been kicking myself for not living up to the standards, but you hit the nail on the head – HONESTY is the best policy. THANK YOU for sticking with it! I’m so excited to see what rabbit food you share in the new year!

April 22, 2013 at 1:53 pm (12 years ago)Wow! I just love reading your blog! I am brand new to the clean eating world and it’s been hard! I am determined to lose weight, get fit and just become an overall happier, healthier me. You are such a motivation! This past February I was told that I have an under active thyroid problem and most likely am PCOS. It was scary and I had no idea what to think and feel. My dr. told me it would be super hard to lose weight and that I would just need to really eat healthy and stay away from carbs. I very much enjoy reading your blog…You are so funny and uplifting. It’s wonderful to see others with similar issues and yet see them being positive. Do you have any advice on what to eat when it comes to thyroid or PCOS problems?
